Symbolism is used in short stories to add for meaning and detailed. Symbolism is included in many short stories, but I found the most interesting symbolism found in “Battle Royal” and “The Cask of Amontillado”. These two short stories utilize symbolism utilize symbolism in similar ways to add meaning and detail to their stories. The main example of symbolism in the short story “Battle Royal” is shown through the white people appearing in a higher state of power. The author writes “Slug him black boy! Knock his guts out,” this is a great example of how the black people were abused physically and verbally by the white people. Through the context of the story (Pg 235) the black people clearly are against fighting each other, and the only reason they are, is because they want to win for the speech (specifically the protagonist). …show more content…
In the story the white people laughed throughout his speech, but when he said “Social Equality” (opposed to saying ‘Social Responsibility’). When the protagonist said this the white man asked him what he said (all the laughing stopped), and then our protagonist replied “Social Responsibility,” which shows he knew he said something ‘wrong’. This passage in our short story shows how afraid of the white people the protagonist/other black people was/were. “The Cask of Amontillado” has many ways of showing symbolism too. The main example of symbolism in the story is the name Fortunato. The definition of the word ‘fortunato’ is ‘lucky’ in the Italian Language. Clearly in the short story Fortunato was not a very lucky person. Montresor opens the book by saying “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge,” (Pg 14) which already shows that Fortunato is going to get a punishment from
