Friday Night Lights timed write “That Nigger just wasted his life”, Boobie Miles spins around to see three white men giving him nasty looks as he walked down the street. Boobie has nothing to say back because even he realizes he has nothing left in his life without football. Many young black people were treated very poorly in this book even though they played the football. Racism is a very important factor to this novel as it is symbolized many times throughout it.
In a press conference about the season a coach was asked a question about Boobie and he absolutely destroys Boobie, saying many hurtful things about him. Even though all the blacks are allowed to go to the same schools and places to eat the blacks felt they weren't allowed onto the other side of the railroad. The whites watched above the blacks on there rich side of the railroad as the blacks felt trapped in a small area of very poor built buildings “They were still concentrated below the railroad tracks, below where the whites lived. Symbolically and physically, the tracks were still a barrier and still defined an attitude.” (Pg. 100). This symbol goes beyond Boobie as it shows how all of the blacks are forced to live in small confined areas due to the white control. IN CONCLUSION, Racism is conveyed in many ways throughout this novel. Symbolization is a very important part and shows the struggles Blacks have in this community. Boobie Miles of all the blacks feels the most hatred due to his ability to play the sport and taking spots away from other players that are mainly white.
