George Orwell’s 1984 is heavily wrought with symbolism, double meanings, and a lot of “newspeak”. Through all of this the reader grasps what life is like in the futuristic, totalitarian society in which the protagonist, Winston Smith, lives. The year is 1984, or so Winston and the other citizens believe, there is no real way to tell due to the fact that the past is always being changed and erased completely from records in order to coordinate with what Big Brother says and what is reality.
