Although Oliver did not state clearly Albert’s true feelings and thoughts, we can discover it through the characterization of his actions and attitudes. Thus, it informs us that Albert is not proud of his identity and background as can be seen when he strongly argued with dissatisfaction that Thai food is “so booorrrrriiinnnggg” and “crap” (82) when was asked to bring some to school. He desperately wants to become more Australian to the point where he willing to sacrifice his highly valued and respected ethnicity by destroying his parents' Thai food in order to degrade it popularity among other cultures during multicultural day. Ironically, although with all his effort, Albert only got embarrassment and guilty as his trick was failed. From this mischievous event, we can also figure out that Albert is unbearable and troublesome boy which also correspond to the title ‘Hot and Spicy’.
The allegorical symbol of “guinea pig” is quite relevant to Albert’s character as a pet to his parents as he thought he have been the object for food experiment. Oliver also shows criticism towards Chinese-Australian society which is Jennie’s mother who cooks “neon pink sweet and sour pork” (85) in order to look more Aussie style which actually not suit at all with the Australian food. In accordance with his humorous writing style, Oliver also used satirical parody to critics Albert behavior on rejecting his own cultural food by plotting a twist when Albert is planning to deceive his parent about the spiciness of his mother food which in turn, he was being prank by his
