Symbolism In James Baldwin's Sonny Blues

In James Baldwin's short story “Sonny Blues” there is a recurring motif that stands out a lot as the story progresses. This is the recurring motif of seeking for salvation. There is also a couple of symbolism in this short story, the one that stood out to me was the cup of trembling which can be found in the bible.
Both brothers in this story are continuously seeking salvation. Sonny seeks salvation from drugs, which were the reason as to why he ended up in prison. While his brother, the narrator, seeks salvation from his regret of not being able to be there for Sonny like his deceased mother had requested from him.
