Symbolism Symbolism is defined as “the symbolic meaning attributed to natural objects or facts” (“Symbolism”). Symbolism is mainly used in literature, but it is commonly used in the real world. It is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities by giving them symbolic meaning. For example, birds can be a symbolism. Birds can represent freedom, human desire to escape gravity, messengers of god, and so on. Many literature writers use symbolism to state their opinion on something. In the poem “Outside History,” by Eavan Boland, “The Horses” by Ted Hughes, “On the Patio” by Peter Redgrove, and “Zero Hour by Ray Bradbury these all show symbols of power.

The poem is about how mother nature can be effective in positive and negative ways. Author Protas states, “It can be associated with birth, fertility, and refreshment” (“Water”). The quote describes that water can be effective in many ways like, water helping trees grow, water refreshes humans and animals, but also kill people in hurricanes. Without water earth would be dead, and so would humans. In the poem the author states, “Because rain eats everything” (line 9). Even though water cannot eat everything literally, during hurricanes, and floods it covers all land, houses, and cars. Water can be so beautiful during times, but also be very powerful in bad ways. For example, when hurricanes occur, the water can be so powerful that it kills people. Redgrove also states, “Snatch the brightest glass up and drain it” (line 16). People drink water on a daily basis, which helps humans body in many ways. Water can be delicious that animals, and humans cannot help, but always take another gulp of
