Throughout history philosophers in all cultures beckoned, but could never distinctly answer, the question: what is the meaning of life? Though life each person experiences different things that make them happy. Some struggle with the dilemma between finding happiness through wealth while others follow their passion. Regardless of the path an individual may choose, a key concept remains at the forefront of the choices one makes, happiness. “Rip Van Winkle” by Washington Irving conveys a deep message about individual happiness. Through symbolism and characterization Irving uses “Rip Van Winkle” to demonstrate that if an individual isn’t using their time living to be happy then it is time wasted. Irving uses characterization to give the reader an idea of what both Rip and his wife are like. Rip is a man who loves nature, especially when hiking with his dog. Rip is popular among the people of his town and frequently played with the children and dogs. However, while Rip does favors and spends time helping out around town, he does not take care of his own responsibilities. One day after Dame's incessant nagging Rip decided to take Wolf up into the mountains to escape for awhile. While there, Rip drinks a mysterious drink and falls asleep, waking up 20 years later. When Rip returns to town, everything is unfamiliar, and Rip finds out Dame is dead. However, Rip is not unhappy that his wife has passed, but rather feels a sense of freedom to do what he likes.
