A person once said, “Discrimination has a a lot of layers that make it tough for minorities to get a leg up,” and that is exactly what Cassie, her brothers and the Logan Family in general;have trouble with, getting a leg up. They demonstrate that, giving up is not an option through any difficult situation during life, the only option is to keep fighting, and that is what the Logan Family exactly did. They have fought through the loss of jobs and they have fought against the trouble they have faced with people trying to take their land and discrimination. T.J symbolizes trouble. Followed throughout the novel, T.J is the source of conflicts that happen in the story. “At first T.J wouldn’t do it, but then he seen Miz Logan startin’ toward ‘em and he slipped Stacey the notes.” In this example, T.J was planning to cheat during the exam but he gives in when Stacey tries to stop him, he slips the cheating notes to Stacey at the wrong timing, “...and by the time he saw her it was too late to get rid of ‘em. The Wallaces in general and their store symbolize a threat to the Logan family and to the african american people that live near. “We don’t want y’all going to that place. Children going there are gonna get themselves in a whole lot of trouble one day.” This quote reveals that, the Wallaces and their store are a bad influence to young children. Papa is warning his children not to go down to the Wallace store because they are a great threat to their possibly successful futures. Papa also knows that the Wallaces give cigarettes and alcohol to minors freely.
