Bad things happen to people all the time and every day. Awful actions happen like rape which is what happened to a girl going into her freshman year in highschool. In the book Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda Sordino is a freshman in high school who is struggling with no friends and a huge secret. At the end of the summer party she started dancing and fooling around with a senior named Andy Evans. She was having a great time but before she knew what was happening she was being raped in his car screaming to have it stop. This book is loaded with symbols of how Melinda grew into a happier person after this happened such as the tree in her front yard, the closet, and the tennis match between her and her old friend.
