The theme of the book The Giver by Lois Lowry is to embrace your differences and what makes you who you are. In this story, there was lots and lots of symbolism, supporting lots of different ideas.There were four main symbols that supported the theme very well. Jonas, December, light eyes, and dreams were the main symbols that really supported and explained the theme.
The first symbol that really supported the theme “embrace your differences” was the character of Jonas. Jonas showed that he was different and he could see things that others could not. The text says “But suddenly Jonas had noticed, following the path of the apple through the air with his eyes, that the piece of fruit had-well, this was the part he couldn’t adequately understand- the apple had changed” (24). This explains how Jonas noticed something different about the the apple. On page 24 Jonas also asks his friend Asher if he notices anything different about the apple. When he says he doesn’t , Jonas realizes that he is seeing something that no one else can. He realizes he is, different.

In the story, December is a time of change and a time that the community places or chooses careers for the kids. It is the one time where the community celebrates their individual differences and puts them where they belong. The text cites “Each December brings such changes” (11). This shows how each December things change and your differences place you where you belongs. The text also says “This is the time,” she began, looking directly at them, “when we acknowledge differences” (51). This clearly shows that in December the community acknowledges and celebrates their differences in order to find out what they will continue to do for a
