In the short story “The Possibility of Evil”, Shirley Jackson uses several symbols to tell her story about miss Strangeworth. One symbol that she uses are the roses. Miss Strangeworth loves her roses a lot more than you would expect. She loved them as if they were her kids. This symbolizes that there must be something about the roses that she likes so much. Another symbol she uses are the letters that Miss Strangeworth writes. Sure she is all nice and kind on the outside however, there is something more inside. She writes mean letter to everyone. This can relate to the title “The Possibility of Evil” because there is a chance that even though she posses the characteristics of a seemingly nice aged lady, she may have evil lurking inside of her.
