In the book The Things They Carried the Author usse of symbolism rather than fact to build up the topic. This an autobiographical narrative this way the setting is real. The story is discussed by Author Tim Obien and demonstrates to the reader a major aspect of Vietnam before and after war. this is represented from the writer's point of view, he is the character Tim O Brien and he is telling the story.After the war, Obrien describes how as Norman drives around the lake he sees things similar to what he saw in the war, symbolising past in Vietnam and present back in America.“Norman Bowker followed the tar road on its seven-mile loop around the lake, and then he started all over again, driving slowly, feeling safe inside his father's big Chevy”. However the book speaks to feelings after war war by using a physical object to represent an idea which is not existing at all. this view Vietnam is a very important topic and theme ”In a true war story, if there's a moral at all, it's like the thread that makes the cloth”This statement relates to war before and after having no meaning e.g. opposite order the fabric cannot make the thread. Likewise this vocabulary permits the carefully readr to understand a string is an article, it can't deliver a material in the same way war is an item to finish it doesn't have a purpose. Obrien is more concerned about the setting he uses metaphors to help the reader understand a picture war the dead. “One eye was shut. The other was a star-shaped hole”. This statement is talking about the soldiers view of death in war, So through the use of a metaphor, it shows a metaphor to a dead person with a gunshot representing the dead. Yet there is a separation between emotions of the soldiers who went to war, this view is seeing the dead as something else rather than dead people.the setting is also a personification changes from good to bad which is symbolic of the past and
