Along with a symbol occurring once in a story, it can also recur multiple times, termed a motif. Whether the contents of a novel are fiction or nonfiction, the idea of having a symbol, with a deeper meaning hidden beneath the surface, is presented in most texts. The presences of these symbols gives the content read more dimension in how. An idea is presented in “Romeo and Juliet” that nature has nothing that is not both decent and corrupt, providing a deeper meaning that when the poison, made from natural herbs, is used to help Juliet, it results in a corrupt death when romeo discovers his bride seemingly dead and ends his life to be with her forever (Shakespeare and Rolfe). The irony presented in this symbol provides an advancement in the play and structure the ending scenes. Also, in the Novel “Lord of the Flies” has many symbols and motifs within its pages, but one big motif that shapes the story progressively throughout the book is the concept of fire whether it be the signal fire in the beginning or the fire used by the group of savage boys in the end (Golding). It twists and transforms as the story evolves. Towards the beginning of the novel by William Golding, the symbol of fire represents hope of getting rescued because the smoke from the fire is used as a signal. As the story progresses the fire stays present but its meaning changes along with the development of the story. The group of surviving boys breaks up into a smaller group of civilised boys and a larger group of tribal boys. This group of tribal boys, once they have built a fire, proceed to dance around it singing a horrible song as they watch a pig burning within the flame (Golding). As the story advanced, the symbol of fire became less and less about being saved, but more about the tribal boys savage ways of surviving.
