When we look at The Scarlet Ibis, we can see some of Doodle’s characteristics hidden in the bird. “Sadly, we all looked back at the bird. A scarlet ibis! How many miles had it traveled to die like this, in our yard, beneath the bleeding tree?” (Hurst 4). The family sees the bird and felt sympathy, but Doodle was the only one who acted on it. Even though, his parents tell him not to touch the bird, he still buries it and sings a traditional funeral song for it. “Limply, he fell backwards onto the earth. He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red”(Hurst 4).
