1. Symbolism of the green light is the most crucial part of chapter 1. The green light represents Gatsby's one true desire.If he just reaches out he can follow his dream.

2. Nick describes himself in the beginning as someone who does not pass judgement on people.He tells us that it is a trait passed on by his father. His father used to tell him to remember the advantages he had before passing judgement.

3. In Tom's first appearance Nick describes Tom as having "two shiny arogant eyes" that "established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggresively forward." Tom's physiciality is seen by Nick as brutal and cruel. These physical features match Tom's behavior as well.
