The novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley was written during the 1800’s, and in that time period scarlet fever was well known. In the story Elizabeth Lavenza and Victor’s mother got scarlet fever, Elizabeth pulls through but Victor’s mother passed away. Scarlet fever is a disease that mostly effects kids but can sometimes spread to adults. When someone gets scarlet fever it feels like a normal fever but it is far worse. While now scarlet fever can be easily treated with antibiotics, back in the 1800’s it was a terrifying disease that took the lives of many children and even adults.
Today, many people in the U.S and Europe don’t know what scarlet fever is and some haven’t heard of it. However in the 1800’s that was not the case. According to Scienceblogs,

Some symptoms, according to Scienceblogs, body aches, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and a red rash which gives scarlet fever its name. These symptoms cause a lot of pain and discomfort to those who have it. Even worse than the pain of scarlet fever, was the fear of being the next victim of this disease. Unfortunately, many faced their worst fear and became another number on the death toll. This is an example of the red rash from scarlet fever.
Scarlet fever was a frightening disease in the 1800’s until the late 1900’s when doctors started making medical evolutions.
