In the novel “Silver Water¨ by Amy Bloom, the story reflects how a family handles a sickness. When Rose started losing her mind, her sister Violet, wanted people to know how loving and cheerful her sister is. Throughout the whole novel, Rose shows signs of her personality that some people in the story overlook. The narrator describes how Rose has not lost herself in the way she acts and her hobbies. Amy Bloom shows through Rose´s personality that people with diseases are more than just their illness.

Finally, the family comes across Dr. Thorne and instantly Rose and Dr. Thorne understood each other. The other doctors sent the family away because of the way Rose acted or if she said something they did not like; while Dr. Thorne accepted Rose with open arms. He taught Rose to respect herself and that she is worth more than the bad thoughts she was having. He comforted her and when she went through a path where she would sleep with any guy, he told her ¨I think you might be able to find a really nice guy, someone who treats you just as sweet and kind as I would if I were lucky enough to be your beau, I don't want you to settle for less”(90). After that talk Rose stopped sleeping with strangers, keeping the family at peace. Rose looked up to Dr. Thorne and was very open to him about how she felt and what she was thinking. Their relationship shows that Rose was able to keep someone by her side that was not related to her. It represented her childhood where she had plenty of friends. Rose’s family grew to love Dr. Thorne because no matter how bad things got with Rose’s illness, he never turned his back on them. He showed them love and compassion and that was something none of them
