The Use of Slang vs. School Slang is words and phrases, used informally in speech outside the realm of proper English. Often times, slang is used to identify peer groups or members of a community. They tend to be casual in nature, relying heavily on euphemism and colloquial expressions. Slang is words that are developed from fads or simple laziness. Slang should never be used in academic or professional writing. There is a difference on how students communicate between home and school. Slang is such a major part of our daily lives, but yet, is so common that no one really notices it anymore. Wherever you walk nowadays, popular culture has shaped our dialect, whether it be from as early as elementary school age children, to full grown adults. To many people, slang is just an easier way to communicate with people. People feel more comfortable using slang than the formal language it is based on. Students are given a sense of value by sharing a common language of sorts, because they long for a feel of acceptance. Some adults may argue that slang is unimportant and frivolous because it is not the proper of professional English language. Slang language creates a bond between peers and plays an important part in peers overall social development. Slang gives peers greater freedom of expression in different ways. If they feel that they can control their scope of their audience, students are most likely to speak freely in an understood language by the group of their friends. Slang is also a form of creative expression. To some slang may seem like a butchering of language, but to others, it can be the rearranging of set building blocks.
