The topic I have chosen to be civically engaged in is immigration. This issue fits in many of the themes we are studying this semester. The 2 main migrant groups that are being discussed in the U.S. today are Mexicans and Syrian Refugees. Both groups are suffering from stereotypes. Mexicans are accused of being drug dealers and criminals here to steal our jobs. Syrian Refugees are accused of being terrorists trying to infiltrate our country to commit acts of terror.

The Syrian Refugees also represent what we’ve been learning about Religion and the allowance for diversity among different religions. Many of the refugees are Muslim and there is currently a great deal of fear about Muslims and their possible ties to terrorist groups. Many are

At this lecture there were 4 people who spoke about the issue of illegal immigrants coming into our country and how we should respond to it. There was a lady who talked about how at the southern border there are native Americans and Mexicans living there. She also said that at the southern border illegal drugs get dealt out. She talked about how the people that are coming across the border aren’t criminals but people who are trying to escape their country because of the violence that is going on in their country. She talked about how building the wall will benefit the wrong people. That building the wall will cause harm to our border. Building the wall will also increase our debt, sex trafficking and smuggling. She talked about how we need to provide protection for laborers. We need to do what we can to protect immigrant families. That what pulls immigrants to the U.S. is The American Dream. She told the audience that politicians can’t agree on a side of immigration because both of the sides go on opposite extremes. The solution she came up with was at our border let all immigration be legal but done with the right paper work and also that we need to provide and help out the humanitarian aid more than we
