“Ta Tatau” by Kruse Va’ai, it is a short story from Western Samoa. The narrator is an eight-year-old Samoan girl who witnesses her father have an elaborate traditional body tattoo. The tattoo ceremony has great cultural significance for Samoan people and the ritual ties up families together. First of all, Rona’s parents have the conflict with each other when the mama found out that her husband has getting the tattoo, she seems very angry. However, the narrator also talks about how her mother’s have a different kind of anger this time, she seems so quiet and gently tired. Not like the other time, she had been angry with the whole world. Which shows her mom is not really angry with her father, and there might be some other reason that her mom doesn't want her husband to getting the tattoo. Lately, the reason is that they are living in the town, which is a place that the traditional tattoos are not important. Since in the town they don’t even have proper samoan fale to be cooler and being better suit her father’s condition. Furthermore, the Rona has never sees that her father so weak and helpless. This is foreshadowing, since her father decides to go back to his village to pursuit a better treatment. Which can shows how the town and village’s different opinion towards the tattoo ritual. Also, while in the village, her father was taking care by his many young cousins and he can feel more comfortable for him not to wear any clothes in the village. This shows there are many limits in the town’s life than in the village’s life. The people can act more freely in the village, since the people in the village are more focus on the traditional things and the town doesn’t. While his father in the town and he still doing the tatau means his father will never forget the tradition of the tattoo
