Last Sunday I attended my local church, Lansing Woodview Church of the Nazarene. We were treated to a fantastic service where the Holy Spirit was really moving. Our senior past, Mark Walker. preached from Hebrews 9:1-15. It was a typical Sunday at Woodview with our usual mix of people during this time of year. This sermon was only the third message that Pastor Mark has preached since returning from sabbatical and one the of best I have heard him preach in over two years of attending the church. Pastor Mark's approach to preaching this passage that discusses worship practices of tabernacle and the establishment of Jesus as the new high priest through his own blood sacrifice interestingly highlighted and brought out the good news of this passage. Contrasting the traditions of the tabernacle worship with the need for a new high priest to once and for all satisfy the burdensome sacrificial system and provide a way for everyone to enter into God's presence. Aiming to engage those in the congregation burdened by stale, tedious faith the good news focused on the promise of joy that comes with being in God's presence. The desired response was to remember Jesus fulfillment of the sacrificial traditions to allow us to have vibrant relationship with God in his presence. Personally, I was prompted to respond because I had felt that my faith was stale as I was going though the motions to some extent.
