Many themes are shown in the poem Tableau by Countee Cullen. The themes of friendship and racism are the most noticeable within the poem. Cullen is telling the story of two boys who are completely different but yet the same. They are both little boys growing up and enjoying life but, one of them is white and the other black. This is frowned upon in the community which these two live but their youth and innocence shelter them from the harsh world.
Initially this poem made me feel sad because of the racism and how the two-boy’s friendship was seen as not acceptable. However, at the end of the poem I felt hope when the poem said, “that lightning brilliant as a sword, should blaze the path of thunder.” This shows that we all just need to believe
