Take This to Heart
Tradition is defined by Webster as “a transmission of customs from generation to generation.” Although this is true, tradition can also be viewed as a way to keep oneself grounded. In a world full of the unknown, traditions always stay the same. Whether they are preformed once a year, or once a week, traditions are a way to keep in touch with loved ones, hold onto something meaningful, or bring peace to a flustered mind. Every Sunday my boyfriend takes me with him to attend his family dinner. His aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents all attend. This tradition has been in his family for generations, and it will one day be his job to host the dinner when the time comes. They all get together to share a meal, discuss the endeavors of the past week, and participate in family games. Although some of his relatives live in other cities, they all come together to experience something most of us only get to have on Thanksgiving. This tradition reminds everyone how important it is to keep family close. Throwing pennies into a wishing well is a superstition that has been around for many decades. Every time we go through a rough patch in our lives, my friend Nichole and I go to Green Cove Springs to toss a penny in the well. Although wishing wells are not dependable they release the tension of an unresolved issue on the mind. After throwing the pennies, we sit on the swing-set and discuss our troubles while watching the sunset over the St. Johns River. Wishes don’t always come true, but making them when there is no alternate solution can put one’s mind at ease. The coveted Easter egg hunt will always be one of my favorite traditions.
