While I did attend Sunday school as a child, and Religious Education as a teen, the story of The Cry of Tamar was new for me. I wasn’t sure what to expect this semester, but this story certainly set the tone for the class.
The book begins with explaining rape to be about power, not sex and the many images of how man perceives woman is truly their insecurity and a threat to their own mortality. The six stereotypes listed in the book: woman as nature, woman as mother, woman as crazy, woman as subhuman, woman as bearer of sin and woman as the gateway to death are all examples of the types of situations that many woman face in their lifetime.

I work in the Compliance Department for a major hospital system and while in most scenarios it’s typical that a woman is a victim of sexual harassment, but it is surprising how often men fall victim as well. When working with so many people in a big hospital it is hard to determine when someone is a true victim of sexual harassment. We have investigated many reported incidents to find out that the individuals were in a relationship that went bad and now that one of those people have moved on and started seeing someone else in the workplace all of the dirty laundry starts to come out. The areas involving rape, assault and battery all stem back to the original comment of these being an action of power over the other person. I will say that the “Myths Surrounding Rape” are sadly true. When I was in my early 20’s I had an experience with a man in a group of friends that I went out with. As my group of friends learned what happened I was hurt, shocked and surprised about some of the comments that found their way back to me. Much of it was perceived as my fault; that I liked to drink and have a good time so what did I expect was going to happen. This man and his wife often went out with us so as a married man I had no interest in him, especially since his wife was usually out with us; he offered to give me a ride home after a night I had too much to drink and then refused to let me out of his car. It was a scary situation that could have ended a lot worse; now my biggest fear is my daughter ever being in a terrible situation like I was
