The culture similarity among East Asia achieved a close connection among different political powers for a long time. They all got impacts from Tang Dynasty which speeded up their process from semi-nomadic society to feudal society. However, because of various social environments, these states developed different cultures in their own way. The successful cultural adoption of states in the North, the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese Archipelago in terms of political institution, Buddhism, language system and social traditions flourished Tang civilization in a brilliant way.
During Tang Dynasty, its culture gradually affected the states in the North through frequent trade and population immigration. First, Silla imitated the aristocracy of Tang Dynasty and then developed it to a higher level. This was apparently reflected on examination system. In Tang Dynasty, through the examination system, although it was hard for a new men to enter the official class, it was still possible in a sense. However, in Silla, it only allowed aristocrats to take the exam at the beginning, which obviously means the ruling class was monopolized by aristocratic families. Due to the design of examination system, the social class would never change as for there was no way for non-aristocratic people to newly get into upper class. Another way Silla aristocrats used to keep the core power inside certain families was the True Bone Rank system.
