Can you imagine having an older brother who is a murderer and thief ? In Tangerine, by Edward Bloor, the protagonist Paul is living with a brother just like that. Throughout the book, Paul has to face his older brother and overcome him and the obstacles he has set. Paul’s older brother, Erik, plays a major role in the development of Paul’s character and social life by shoving Paul out and treating his friends poorly.

Ever since Paul was little, Erik has been ruining Paul’s life. When they lived in Silver Meadows, Paul caught Vincent Castor and Erik vandalizing a wall with white spray paint. Erik found out about this and when Castor got in trouble Erik believed the snitch who disclosed Castor was Paul. In the quote

This is why friends like Joey have left him. In part 3 of the book, it says,”Erik lashed out, smashing the back of his hand across Tino’s face… She (Theresa) walked Tino out through the gate without even saying a word. You can truly see how psychotic Erik is in this quote. As soon as Paul gets lots of new friends Erik scares them away and there so frightened they're scared to go to Paul’s house again. This was the same with Joey. Except when Joey was over, Erik was making jokes about his dead brother. This was one of the biggest contributor to why Joey stopped being Paul’s friend. Erik isn’t doing this for a good purpose. He just does it so Erik has no friends and feels worse about himself. By pushing Paul down Erik feels much more important.

In Paul’s family one big thing with Erik is getting the most attention possible from their parents. Starting from the beginning of the book, Erik has been trying to get the most attention by pushing Paul out. You can see this when Paul is asking his dad if he knows anything about his soccer
