Defining Indian
The Norton Sampler possesses two great examples of a definitive articles. If You Are What You Eat, Then What Am I? and Se Habla Español will bend your perspective of the definition of minorities. Se Habla Español portrays an excellent definition of what it means to be a Latina. While Geeta Kothari also defines Indian people in her excerpt from The Norton Sampler. I enjoy the articles because they gave me new knowledge of minorities.
First, Tanya Marla Barrientos’ Se Habla Español portrays an excellent definition of what it means to be a true Latina. Although Tanya Marla is a native Guatemalan person, she doesn’t speak Española, which apparently defines if you are a Latina. I did not like the essay because I felt it wasn’t targeted towards me. I believe it was written well, but was for a different audience. I did learn that something new though. I learned that “…Spanish is the glue in the Latino community…” (Norton 438) I feel it’s important for other people in that community to be aware of that, but not me. Essentially, Barrientos’ article depicts society’s opinion of Latinas while structuring it with all the necessary qualifications for a definitive essay.

She exposes an excellent definition of what it means to be an Indian via the food you eat. Personally, I love the Indian food I’ve eaten and I would probably be qualified as a true tourist when it comes to knowledge of curry and rice. I can see myself in the article she wrote because I don’t know anything about Indian food. Kothari incorporates her personal outlook and involvement of what it means to be Indian by admitting her lack of true Indian food knowledge and I appreciate that she admitted her lack of knowledge.
