Introduction

Red is the fourth album released on October 22, 2012 by Taylor Swift, an American singer-songwriter. Taylor Swift started her career in the country music field and broadened her audience with the mainstream pop album ‘Red’, as her four feature songs released prior to the albums release made it onto the radio worldwide. ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’, ‘22’, ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ and ‘Everything Has Changed’ feat the well known pop British artist, Ed Sheeran, all made it into Billboard Top 100 and Billboard Hot 100 Airplay. ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ and ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together both got the No.1 spot on the Billboard Top 100. As well as being romantically linked to Harry Styles, a world-wide phenomenon ‘boy-band’ member, Taylor Swift has been linked to models such as Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevigne who all share a simular target audience, mainstream. Taylor Swift is a world-renowned artist although; the majority of Taylor Swift’s fans are under the mainstream category of adolescent females between the younger years from 6 to 20 years of age. This is reflected in the style of CD cover Swift has incorporated. As she describes the album to be a reflection of her, “red emotions” with themes of love and heartbreak, the red lipstick and red coloured title ‘Red’ all convey the content of the CD to the intended audience.

Taylor Swift’s album ‘Red’ is constructed to appeal to a mainstream, young to adolescent female audience from middle class to upper class in particular, although Swift is a world renowned artist of this generation. Mainstream artists- - strongly identified as ‘Pop’ genre- are generally appealing to a specific audience, that being 6-20 year old females. The young adolescent fan-base all share simular interests in fashion, relationships, pop-culture and music and values, so the artist would appeal to their audience through those. In the ‘Red’ album cover Taylor Swift is shown side on to the camera with half of her face in shadow. Her lips, however, are shown in vivid colour, wearing red lipstick. Before the release of the album Swift was also known for her signature ‘Red-lip’ make-up look. The ‘Red-lip’ look was also brought into fashion with models for world-renowned designers such as; Karl Lagerfeld wearing red lipstick down the runways for Chanel.
