Compare the Culture of Taxi Driver Versus Queen
The Film Taxi Driver by Martin Scorsese and the painting “Queen” by Audrey Flack both depict the cultural beliefs of sexual liberation and feminism in the 1970s.
In the painting “Queen”, a blooming red rose and apple is depicted to symbolize woman’s sexuality contrastingly. The blooming rose represents female genitalia, which celebrates sexual acts or preferences. In other words, sexual freedom. Whereas, the apple represents the forbidden biblical apple of Adam and Eve, which prohibits female’s burgeoning sexuality. In other words, it represents sexual innocence and virginity. The theme of this painting is the beauty and power of females. Besides, she also painted herself and her mother in a medallion bearing, which made this painting partly an autobiography that used to present her memorable personal objects. She also explained in an interview that “I painted what was around me and what I was interested in.” The style of this painting, therefore, is expressionism because Flack subjectively painted all female objects to express her point of view towards female’s power. In the film “taxi driver”, subjective emotions from the protagonist also suggested that the style is expressionism. The whole film was narrated in a first-person point of view, which is the distorted view of Travis. For example, how he feels about the filthy New York City, prostitution, how he thinks violent is an act of heroism and how he thinks that Iris is the girl he needs to save. Thus, these skewed point-of-view of Travis and the subjective thoughts of Flack both reflects the style of
