First, I believe that authentic, real-life instruction where students help to develop their learning is fundamental to developing motivation among students in the classroom. Students are more actively engaged and motivated to learn when the content is meaningful and relevant to their everyday lives. The content naturally becomes more meaningful and relevant when learning is primarily student-driven rather than teacher-driven. In addition, I believe that it is important to find ways to make the classroom interesting, stimulating and fun for all students while still providing content that is relevant and rigorous. This means that I use a wide variety of resources in order to teach the curriculum. In order to generate such interest and provide truly authentic instruction, I like to learn about and discover who my students are – what they like and dislike, what kind of support they have as well as their obstacles to learning. Finally, I utilize multiple forms of assessment that provides students with many opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and also provides me with a way to evaluate my own teaching.
Second, to reach this level of engagement in today’s classroom, I seek to involve the students as an essential component of the learning process. I do this by demonstrating the value of education, expecting and even at times demanding self-control, peer support, cooperation and overall classroom involvement. I can only foster such a community through high expectations of student behavior and academic performance.
Third, I believe that effective classroom management, with consideration to the organization of students, space, time and materials, is a major component for learning. Effective classroom management is reflected through preparedness, organization and establishment of routines and procedures. Every minute of class time should be focused on the process of learning, and a more organized classroom supports smooth transitions and results in more time on tasks for the students.
Fourth, I believe that effective teachers are required to have a heightened awareness of their surroundings, always observing and monitoring student behavior. Teachers must have fair and consistent expectations from students and demonstrate a proactive management style, handling problems before they become bigger.
