Summary:
The article “The Robot Economy: As rapid technological advances create more powerful robots, which jobs will be left behind?” Is mainly about robots taking over the job industry and how the economy is restructuring. In the beginning the article shows how Japanese engineers have invented driverless automobiles. It is discussed that this invention might take the jobs of more than one million truck drivers. But, the CEO of YRC World Wide claims that even though technology is become a bigger part of our economy robot drivers aren’t going to be able to notice things that a human would notice while driving. The author of the article also talks about robots taking routine jobs. For example a robot could be able to do something over and over without getting tired like a real person. And the thing is that many people would lose jobs like in restaurants because of robots. A thing that worries economists is that robots might go from assisting human workers to making them obsolete. Economists think that technology can advance to the point that humans won’t have to operate machines.

The author involves factual information in the article to support his argument of how the individual is evolving through technology. In the article the author says “Japanese engineers pulled off an impressive demonstration earlier this year. The engineers arranged three trucks to go steadily at 50 mph without drivers.” (Von Drehile) In other words the author is showing how Japanese engineers made three trucks move at a pace without any human drivers. This quote shows how the human individual has evolved because in the early 1900’s the Model T was being driven around, and that car didn’t even have a roof! And now engineers are controlling cars with robots instead of humans, so one can see how much the individual has evolved in about a century. Imagery is used to prove how technology is impacting/changing future jobs. In the article the author says, “As computing power continues to increase and code writers continue to work their binary miracles, more and more occupations will fall into that category. We will see more robots in teaching, sales, nursing, stick trading- and journalism too.” (Drehile) To clarify, the quote is creating a vision into the future and shows how technology will take over many jobs, especially jobs that are a routine. This makes one visualize how great technology will become. But it also makes one think how this technological revolution is going to affect the job industry.
