During the Civil War in the mid-nineteenth century there was a technological revolution that changed how the war was fought, recorded, and remembered. The uprising of technologies like the railroad, telegraph, newspapers, and photographs altered society in ways that parallel modern society. Outlined throughout are the main technological advancements during the Civil War and how these advancements correspond to current times.

Technology During Civil War The technology boom during the civil war changed how both the north and south fought by introducing new ways to travel, communicate, and strategize. While both sides had access to a railroad system, the northern arrangement was much more extensive and widespread. While in the south, “many Americans still lived in a nearly self-sufficient handicraft, premarket economy” (McPherson). Lack of industry in the South hindered their abilities to do things like get supplies to troops. While in the north, their more extensive railway system allowed them to move troops and supplies with more freedom. This gave the Union an edge in having abler troops and a sturdier infrastructure. As well, the rise of the telegraph allowed efficient long distance communication. Through the use of telegraphs, commanders were able to communicate current information about a battle. Through the rise of the internet we are seeing that many newspapers are becoming outdated in favor of online sources.
