O’Brien always reiterates the story of Ted Lavender’s death. He mentions it multiple times, especially at odd places. For example, when the soldiers are relaxed and cracking up jokes, Ted states “They were waiting for Lavender's chopper, smoking the dead man's dope” (O’Brien 8). The death of Lavender significantly affected Tim especially since he was still a young man with his life ahead of him. Actually according to Tim, Lavender was afraid and never cut out for war “Ted Lavender, who was scared, carried tranquilizers until he was shot in the head outside the village of Than Khe in mid-April ” (O’Brien 2).
