“The Silence of the Lambs”, written by Ted Tally, and directed by Johnathan Demme is a mystery/horror film depicting the adventures of a young female detective on a hunt for a demented serial killer. The plot of the movie is centered around how the FBI wants Clarice, the female detective, to investigate a vicious murderer nicknamed Buffalo Bill, who kills young women and then removes the skin from their bodies. Clarice is sent by her supervisor to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Dr. Lecter is a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Crawford, Clarice’s supervisor, believes that Lecter may have insight into this case and that Starling, as an attractive young woman, may be just the bait to draw him out. However, Buffalo Bill has a bit more to handle than Hannibal does. The reason Buffalo Bill went to Hannibal for psychiatric help was for his gender dysphoria. Buffalo Bill had many cross-gendered tendencies such as cross-dressing, and, “Having strong desires to be treated as the other gender or to be rid of one’s sex characteristics” (dsm5.org). In terms of their (ASPD), both characters exhibited symptoms that include Disregard for right and wrong, hostility, lack of empathy, and failure to learn the consequences of one’s behavior. In terms of treatment, Hannibal was supposed to only be locked away for the rest of his life. His disease was deemed irreversible by society. Buffalo Bill on the other hand actually went to Hannibal as a patient looking for psychiatric help. Additionally, in the movie, one of the pieces of evidence that narrows down his location is that he applied to three different hospitals for gender change surgery.
