From 1880 to 1885 Anglos blamed Tejanos for the Rio Grande region not resembling law and order. Anglos nicknamed it “The dead line of Sheriffs”. Nevertheless, it was also Anglos that were creating “killing squads” and “death squads”. Without second thought these killing and death squads would go around killing any Tejanos they saw on site, as well as in some cases, they would throw their bodies in the lake, and hang these people on trees. Anglos saw it as, any Mexican that was living in this area was considered to be a criminal. Because of this violence, it leads to many Tejanos abandoning their homes, their lives there, and practically everything they’ve worked hard for and created. When someone is to be deported back to their original country, much like the Tejanos then they abandon everything as well. Sheriff W.T. Morris was given the description, a “medium sized Mexican” had stolen a horse. In search he came across Cortez who had recently traded for a horse. Upon questioning Cortez, the tension was growing due to horrible translations and the excessive questions being asked because not only did Morris believe Cortez was lying to him, Cortez also fell into the ideology of being a criminal. Many more terrible translations later, Morris attempted to shoot Cortez, missed and hit his brother who was also in the room. Cortez shot at the officer in self-defense, later fled. This situation resembles police brutality cases that happen to this day.
