The Odyssey is a story of a boy becoming a man and pursuing arete. Telemachus, son of Odysseus, lost his father in the Trojan war. He has not seen his father in over 20 years. His father was King of Ithaka and owned a vast estate. Telemachus is around 21 years old, but he has not been able to become a man because he does not have his father to guide him along the path of becoming a man and achieving arete. However, with the guidance of Athena, the mighty god of wisdom, he will go on a quest to save his father. During this quest, he will have to grow up and become a man if he want's to find Odysseus. By the end of his quest to find Odysseus, Telemachus will have achieved arete and manhood.
On Telemachus's journey, we must first start in Ithaka. Ithaka is where he was born and raised it was peaceful, and everything was perfect. Until Odysseus was presumed dead, that was when the suitors started to arrive. They devoured the food and wine, but they did not bring gifts as guests were meant to. The suitors were there to try and become King of Ithaka by receiving Penelope's hand in marriage. Penelope is Telemachus's mother and Odysseus's wife; this makes her the queen of Ithaka and whoever she was to marry would become the new king and the owner of Odysseus's estate. After the feast, King Nestor tells Telemachus that his father left Troy with him, but decided to turn around and go back with King Menelaus and give a sacrifice to appease Athena.
