Edgar Allan Poe used the literary device of setting to create a dark, threatening tone in his short story,” Tell-Tale Heart” by using words such as nervous, dreadfully, hell, and made in the first paragraph alone to help set the mood of horror. Most of the story is set late at night and in dark. By the third paragraph, the narrator says that he has already killed the old man, and Poe attracts the reader in and say the unanswered questions about how the murder will happen and whether the killer will get away with it.
