Edgar Allan Poe used the elements of setting to create a dark, threatening tone in a “Tell-Tale Heart” by using atmosphere, location, elapsed time, man-made geography and population. The narrator is also insane and a liar making the reader feel scared and concerned. He often tries to convince the readers he isn’t insane but he proves himself wrong time after time throughout the story.
He used atmosphere and mood often throughout the story. For example, in (539:3) the narrator is invisible to the old man as a result of the pitch black. He doesn’t notice the murderer in his own room making the reader feel scared because everyone is terrified of the dark including the old man. Everyone always convinces themselves that there’s nothing in the dark but this time that wasn’t true. Also in (540:3) when a single ray of light hit the eye, the narrator becomes angry due to the fact that the eye’s the reason he wants to murder the old man making the reader fear that he’ll definitely die and the narrator won’t have mercy. …show more content…
For example in (540:5) the character kills the man in his own bedroom however, your room is the place you're supposed to feel safe. He used the population also in the story. Ever since (538:1) to (540:5) the reader never knows if there is anyone else nearby. This makes it seem as though it’s just man vs. killer giving the impression that no one will be able to aid the old man. Then, in (541:3) the police come to the house and the killer is able to deceive the officers about the man’s whereabouts because the man lived alone. The narrator’s successful lie causes the reader to fear that perhaps this insane murderer won’t be caught and no one will know the man
