2. Describe in detail at least 5 proposed strategic steps and methods to turn Mars into a second Earth through the process of terraforming. The first proposed step would be thickening Mars atmosphere. To do this we would need to increase ammonia levels in the air to allow the Mars ozone layer to be thick enough to filter the suns radiation. A second step would be creating a breathable atmosphere. Since Mars “air” is mostly carbon dioxide, we would bring greenhouses over to allow plants to photosynthesize with it and create oxygen. Plants will intake the CO2 and release pure oxygen allowing humans to breathe without spacesuits on the glorious planet. A third step would be heating up the planet. This would be done by adding greenhouse gases to the Martian environment to stabilize warmer temperatures (the greenhouse gases capture enough heat in the atmosphere to keep a comfortable, livable, temperature). The fourth step would be melting the water …show more content…
The first challenge will be the psychological impact of being thousands of miles away and witnessing your planet becoming smaller by the second through a tiny space craft window. Imagine the terror of helplessly floating in space and having the safety of your planet slowly drift away from you. The reality begins to set in that you are no longer in the comfort of your planet. The second psychological impact could be the effect of living on a foreign planet for an extended period of time. The feeling of abandonment may occur because you, again, are thousands of miles away from home. The astronauts would need time to get use to the new planet and their new way of life. Lastly, there is a social issue that may occur on this trip. The astronauts will be stuck with each other for this extended amount of time. They will need to get accustomed to working together and being with this specific group of people for a lengthy amount of
