In “The Lottery”, the author greatly uses characterization and setting to describe how the village is accepting a violent tradition that has been going on for over seventy years. One of the unlucky villagers named Tessie Hutchinson is a victim of the lottery and a character that changes the most throughout the story. The tradition is held during the beautiful summer days of June before noon, but all the villagers know a life is going to be taken away forcefully.

Tessie Hutchinson is randomly selected to be stoned to death by the lottery. She is introduced as being the most different than any of the people around her. At first, Mrs. Hutchinson claims that she failed to remember what day it is and decides to join the crowd with a casual attitude without acknowledging she is late and pushes her husband Mr. Hutchinson to go select a paper. While Mr. Summers calls up other families, she is mocking those who were picked and supported the lottery. However, when she realizes that her family is chosen, her attitude sparks a switch in a heartbeat. “I tell you it wasn't fair. You didn't give him time enough to choose. Everybody saw that.” (104) Tessie is now the person who is disappointed and has to sacrifice herself for the village. Tessie’s death is a great example of how this town prosecutes a random person for being chosen from a box. Moreover, Mr. Summers could not have the Hutchinson family choose another

Tessie Hutchinson is a character who has evolved the most by first wanting the village to perform the lottery. She completely changed her mind when she, herself, was going to be stoned. Unfortunately, throughout the story the setting is shown to be a happy environment, celebrating the tradition and a peaceful town until the ending comes.
