“It wasn't fair,” (7). Tessie, the scapegoat explained. In the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, there is a black box in which the villagers pull pieces of paper out of. All of the papers would be blank but one. One of the papers would have a big black dot in the middle. If any of the villagers got the paper with the big dot in the middle, they would get stones thrown at them by all of the other villagers. All the villagers pick a folded piece of paper, then unfold the paper it to reveal if they won or not. Mrs. Hutchinson husband, Bill Hutchinson unfolded his wives paper for her. She was the winner. She had the black dotted paper. The rest of the villagers reached to the floor to pick up the closest stone, then they began throwing them at Tessie. Hutchinson does not believe that the lottery is fair. “It isn't fair, it isn’t right,” (7). Mrs. Hutchinson screamed. This quote describes how Mrs. Hutchinson believes that the lottery is not fair because the winner gets stones thrown at them by the losing villagers. Mrs. Hutchinson also claims, “You didn't give him enough time to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn't fair!” (5). Therefore, Mrs. Hutchinson thinks the lottery is not fair because he was not given enough time to pick the paper that he wanted and even though she won she got stones thrown at her. Mrs. Hutchinson is treated unfairly. The story quotes “Bill Hutchinson went over to his wife and forced the slip of paper out of her hand. It had a black spot on it,” (7). This quote explains that Tessie won therefore meaning she gets stones thrown at her by the other villagers. “Shut up Tessie,” (5). Bill Hutchinson explained. This quote demonstrates that even Mr. Hutchinson’s treats Mrs. Hutchinson unfairly. Therefore Mrs. Hutchinson needs to be treated like the other villagers are getting
