1) Mr.Graves and Mr.summers controls the town. In the story Mr.Summers is the major of the town, he has a lot of time to devote to these type of activities. Also, Mr.Graves is the government official, the postmaster, which shows he has a politically position in the town. Since these two are in charge of the lottery this indicates that they control the town because of their social class which is recognized by the people in the town.

3) I feel the towns peoples actions in “The Lottery” were cruel. This is because the tradition in the town was only based on probability, which leads to ones death for no apparent reason. This breaks many families, especially when your own family was apart of the stoning.

4) The original purpose of The Lottery

The character that best indicates what is to follow would be Tessie. This is because after she looks at the paper she is very upset and angry and starts to suggest that the whole process is unfair.

8) One of the themes of The Lottery is hypocrisy. In the story Tessie’s friend,Delacroix, starts joking about how late she is but when Tessie was chosen she picks the largest stone and also tells everyone to hurry up. Mrs.Hutchinson also showed hypocrisy when she tells her husband to go on and pick the paper. When her family were the unlucky ones she starts yelling it wasn’t fair. I believe it is not morally justified to kill another person for your own satisfaction. Any tradition that could potentially hurt someone seems wrong to me but it could have a deeper meaning than the readers can get from the text.

1) I was surprised by the ending of the story because the tittle “The Lottery” sounds like something unthreatening and indicated the winning of something. Also, when the people of the town were gathered they were smiling and talking to one another as if they were participating in a draw for money or a prize. When the author started talking about the boys who had already collected the stones and Delacroix picking a large stone, I knew that Tessie was going to get stoned.Instead of the regular lottery were you win a prize, it turned out to be one where you lost your life.

2) Jackson lull us into thinking that this is an ordinary story with an ordinary town by explaining the atmosphere to be happy and warm. Also, suggesting that the town is gathering for an annual event later on that day. Jackson foreshadows the ending when he talks about the boys collecting the rocks, where they are looking for the most smoothest and roundest
