Professor Bisaccia The death penalty also known as “capital punishment” is being used in about 31 states and is used by the federal government for punishing criminals. Texas and Virginia are two of the top death penalty states with a shared number of 580 people executed. It is mostly used for criminals who are convicted of murder. The definition of the death penalty is; execution of an offender sentenced to death after conviction offense. The government has an obligation to provide public safety and to follow the law. The use of the death penalty puts the United States in the same category as counties like Iran and Saudi Arabia which are two of the world’s worst human right violators.

In Texas, it cost three times more money than putting an inmate in the highest security level in a jail for forty years. It also takes time for a death penalty case to be processed and a convict to be sentenced to the death penalty. Most crimes end up with criminals serving jail time. Sometimes people turn up innocent, because they were only sent to jail and not sentenced but it can be reversed sometimes. A death penalty is irreversible. The death penalty, both in the U.S. and around the world is discriminatory and is used disproportionately against the poor, minorities and members or racial, ethnic and religious communities. It deters potential criminals as well as serves retribution to criminals, and is in no way immoral. It is important that the nation is united on this issue. I believe that every country should go about not having it at all. Criminals who commit the act of murdering people or even helping commit the crime should be sentenced to death in prison, rather than being put to the death penalty. I believe that it is more powerful to be in prison for the rest of your life. It defiantly shows the person who committed the crime of murdering someone that it is not okay to kill another human being. I do not think that they would have liked it if someone they loved was murdered, so why do it to someone else’s loved ones. I believe that the death penalty is the ultimate denial of human rights. Some people are wrongly convicted, innocent people have received death penalty sentences, and tragically were killed by the states. Killing human life is morally wrong under all circumstances. Capital punishment does not appear to be doing its job, it does not seem to be changing every criminal’s mind about killing innocent people. The warning of life in prison without parole must equally dissuade criminals. Society should move away from the
