As the old saying goes “Lady Fortune is a two faced beast who shines on one person one day with an abundance of blessings and punishes that same person the next day with curses without any remorse.” In spite of its success after 1912, Texas State Lutheran College had to use all its strength to endure through a tide of finically pain brought upon by great depression. During the 1930s, the college along with the country had undergone through financial distress because of the lack of money their organization had contributed to the school during the time. In spite of the additional buildings to the college’s campus during the 20’s, it had no method of keeping these new facilities running along with some of their established buildings. The college had collected debt from the massive building program that turned it into a junior college. This caused the college to add more on their annual budget to pay off the debt about approximately “$9,000…to provide a 5% interest and a 2% sinking fund” Not to mention, Lutheran college had no way to pay their bills on a monthly basis. The church had to put the College on a “pay as you receive basis” until they got enough money to pay for their campuses facilitates back to the owners. According to the college’s board of directors’ chair at the time, “we had to ask firms who we owe for fuel, gas and light for extension of time since we cannot pay are bills.” Fortunately, the director of stewardship of the Texas Lutheran church sent them checks to cover some of their expenses until May 1933. Despite having a heavy burden put on the college’s shoulders, it managed to thrive between the years of 1933-1934 with the help of small donations from some families and other organizations. In addition, the college had imposed a cooperative basis for keeping dorms and the dining hall clean since they had to cut most of their staff. The heads of the college thought that these cost saving measure to allow the college to cut funds to pay for its debts, since putting the “putting the dining room on a cooperative basis naturally eliminates Mr.Eisenmerger” the janitor of the school who they fired.
