The history of Texas as being a one-party state started with the Democrats taking the government over after Edmund Davis’ and their control of the state would last up until the late 1900’s. Some of the ramifications of the one-party rule were that liberal and conservative Democrats would dispute causing dysfunction within the party, also due to there being only one party and their being fighting within some of the Democrats started splitting off into the Republican party. The rise of the two-party system was due to infighting within the Democratic Party as well as the emergence of Conservative Democrats that eventually went into the Republican Party. The history of the one-party system in Texas started when the Democrats defeated Edmund J. Davis who was a Republican (Harpham Champagne 117). The defeat of Davis signified a changing of government within Texas, they created a new constitution, and overall a new government. On one hand there were the liberal Democrats who were traditional in their beliefs and then there were the conservative Democrats who did not align with the National Democratic Parties philosophies on multiple topics. The infighting between these two groups within the Democratic Party made it so that Conservative Democrats felt more aligned to the Republicans of their state than their own party. Due to the fact that Conservative Democrats leaned more towards the Republican Party then their own they started splintering off and joining the Republican Party.
