Texting and driving is a powerful act that can lead to drastic changes in your life. People tend to feel bravery towards themselves when going on their phone to text and drive and don't think twice before they pull it out. In Luanne Rice's’ book, The Secret Language Of Sisters, Ruth Ann, a teenage girl living in the real world, decides to take her phone out to respond to her sister who is like her best friends message and ends up ruining her life. Texting and driving can change your life dramastically.
At the beginning of the story, Ruth is on her way to get Tilly, her sister, from the library when she receives a text from Tilly asking where she is and how much longer should would be. Without thinking Roo {as she was called} pulls out her phone and respond to the message. When Roo takes her eyes of the road she loses control and hits a dog causing her car to flip, putting her in the hospital. “ I was totally immobile, wrapped in sheets and blankets and bandages; that's what it felt like.” Roo thought about unable to talk. According to Parkview Health “The United States Department of Transportation notes that cell phones are involved in 1.6 million auto crashes each year that cause a half million injuries and take 6,000 lives.” For example, “On February 19, 2011 Ashley Jones-Davis was killed in a horrific car accident. She was texting and driving when she drove left of the centerline and hit a box truck head-on. She died on the scene.” Ashley didn't even make it to the hospital before she died as explained by Parkview Health. Therefore, why would you even think about pulling your phone out knowing that you have a high chance of dying?
