In the book Thank you Ma'm by Langston Hughes, a large woman called Mrs Luella Bates Washington Jones meets a poor boy named Roger on the sidewalk. Roger runs behind Mrs Jones and tries to snatch her large purse, but instead, he loses his balance and falls down. But instead of beating him up, Mrs. Jones takes him to her home and cooks him dinner and makes him a cocoa. I believe that Mrs. Jones took Roger home because she thought he was a poor child and she felt sorry for him, and because she saw something in him that she saw in her past. My first reason why I believe Mrs Jones felt sorry for Roger is because when she and Roger were talking on the day bed, she said “ I were young once and I wanted things I could not get.”(page 9, line 107-108) There was a long pause, and then she said “ You thought I was going to say but, didn't you? You thought I was going to say, but I didn't snatch people's pocket books. Well, I wasn't going to say that.”(page 9, line 112-115) These quotes tells us that she has …show more content…
Jones took Roger home is on page 10, line 141-143. It said “The woman did not ask the boy anything about where he lived, or his folks, or anything else that embarrass him.” This quote says that Mrs Jones didn't ask about Rogers personal business or anything that embarrasses him. This means that Mrs. Jones wasn't going to let the cops know about this incident in the first place. If she was, she would ask Roger about his parents, his address and things like that. This comes to a conclusion that Mrs. Jones took Roger to her house for no reason, just to make him dinner and to make his face clean. It also comes from her experience. As I said in the last paragraph, when there was a quote that said that Mrs. Jones stepped across the line of law to get something that she didn't have.
