Thanksgiving was always an eventful time of the year. Steeped in family tradition or maybe it was just Hanna scooting everyone out the door so she could prepare the Thanksgiving dinner in peace and quiet, one was never quite sure why she was so happy to see them leave. The day began well before the break of dawn. All seven children bundled up in layers of socks, pants, and shirts. After donning snowsuits, boots, mittens, hats, and scarves, they piled into the family car. Max took them to the bar he frequented and met up with friends before loading everyone onto the city bus that would take them downtown where they would watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade, live.

Flames squirted in every direction. No one seemed to know what to do. Mayhem broke out in the kitchen. Ten people pushed toward the oven, an area big enough for two. Between the Polish and English, it was impossible to understand what anyone was shouting.
Several thoughts raced through Millie’s mind during those few moments, I know who is getting burned turkey on their dinner table tonight. Slowly, Millie opened the oven door carefully shaking the only box of baking soda in the house, all over the turkeys and grease that flooded to the bottom of the oven. The white powder coated the golden brown turkeys as the fire died out.
As Hanna stood nearby with a glass of water, Uncle Stan marveled, “That was good thinking, Millie. How did you know to do that?”
Millie’s hand shook as she put the empty box on the counter, “I learned about grease fires in Home Economics. You’re never supposed to throw water on a grease fire. It makes the fire worse.” Millie couldn’t help but stare at the glass of water in her mother’s hand.
