Matthews is saying that sometimes you go to a different place where you expect to be vetoed. However, there are places where you can be who you are and still be accepted, and that beautiful thing gives people hope. In The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, the main character is a Indian teenager named Junior who lives on a reservation filled with hopeless people. Junior doesn’t want to end up without hope like the rest of the Indians, so he leaves and starts to attend a white school outside of the reservation. He struggles to be accepted both at home and at school, but Junior comes to a conclusion that he can be who he is and still be part of multiple communities. After seeing so many signs that the reservation is hopeless, Junior realizes that he has to leave. Once he makes it to Reardan, his reservation roots kick in and make him tough and confident against the white kids. Both places make him eventually come to the conclusion that the world isn’t divided by tribes or colors. This is because he finally gains acceptance, which is a wonderful thing. Once someone feels comfortable and accepted in their environment, their possibilities are limitless. The idea that where you come from can influence you throughout your whole life is what makes places so important. It can grant you opportunities and make a dream reality. Places follow you everywhere, even if you’re not there at the
