First impressions can shape the way you think about something, even before you know anything about it. My first impression of Rowdy, a character in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, was that he was a strong brute with no mind that Arnold has to protect himself. Rowdy has been Arnold's best friend for his entire life. They hang out all the time and they do everything together. They are basically brothers. Arnold needs Rowdy for many different reasons. One way is that Arnold is very small and stutters and Rowdy is very big and strong. Because of Arnold’s stutter and size, he is a target for many bullies. Yet, Rowdy is always there to stand up for him. “They beat the shit out of any available loser. And I am always the most available
